The SaaS industry is growing rapidly, with thousands of new products launching every year. However, building a product is only the first step; gaining visibility and competing in search remains a major challenge for startups.

To understand the role of link building in SaaS growth, Get Pro Links analysed (Sep-2026) 700+ SaaS startups launched through Product Hunt in August 2025 and studied their backlink profiles, referring domains, and organic performance after one year.

The research revealed a strong relationship between backlink authority and SaaS growth, showing that startups with stronger link profiles were more likely to achieve higher organic visibility.

    Key Takeaways

    • 62.4% of SaaS startups had no measurable organic traffic after approximately one year.
    • Only 10.3% of SaaS startups reached 1,000+ monthly organic visits, while just 4.3% crossed 10,000+ monthly visits.
    • 61% of SaaS startups reaching 10,000+ monthly organic visits had more than 1,000 referring domains.
    • SaaS startups reaching 1,000+ monthly organic visits typically had 726+ referring domains and 6,793+ backlinks.
    • Among SaaS websites with 10,000+ backlinks, approximately 35% still had no measurable organic traffic.

    Why We Conducted This Study

The SaaS industry has become increasingly competitive, with thousands of new products entering the market every year. While launching a SaaS product has become easier, gaining organic visibility and competing against established brands remains one of the biggest challenges for startups.

Backlinks have long been considered an important authority signal, but the actual impact of link building on early-stage SaaS growth is often unclear. Get Pro Links conducted this study to analyse how backlink profiles, referring domains, and external authority signals correlate with organic performance among newly launched SaaS startups.

By analysing 700+ SaaS startups launched through Product Hunt in August 2025, Get Pro Links aimed to identify whether startups with stronger backlink ecosystems were more likely to achieve higher search visibility, organic traffic growth, and long-term online presence.

Most SaaS Startups Struggle to Build Organic Visibility Within Their First Year

The ability to launch a SaaS product has become easier than ever, but achieving organic visibility remains a major challenge for new companies entering the market.

The research found that 62.4% of SaaS startups had no measurable organic traffic after one year. Only 10.3% managed to reach 1,000+ monthly organic visits, while just 4.3% crossed the 10,000+ monthly organic traffic mark.

These numbers highlight the gap between launching a product and building a sustainable acquisition channel. While modern development tools have reduced the barriers to creating software, gaining visibility against established competitors remains one of the biggest challenges for early-stage SaaS companies.

For startups, the challenge is no longer only building a product; it is building enough authority and recognition for search engines and users to discover it.

61% of SaaS Startups Reaching 10,000+ Monthly Organic Visits Had More Than 1,000 Referring Domains

Among SaaS startups that achieved significant organic visibility, one pattern appeared consistently: they had developed a much broader presence across the web.

Get Pro Links’ research found that 61% of SaaS startups reaching 10,000+ monthly organic visits had more than 1,000 referring domains. The same group also showed a strong backlink footprint, with 61% having accumulated more than 15,700 backlinks.

This finding suggests that high-performing SaaS startups were generally not relying on a limited number of external references. Instead, they had earned mentions from a large number of independent websites, creating stronger signals of authority and recognition.

Referring domains are particularly important because they represent the breadth of a website’s external reputation. A startup mentioned by hundreds of relevant websites is building a different level of authority compared with one receiving thousands of links from a small number of sources.

These figures should not be interpreted as a fixed requirement for every SaaS company. The required level of authority depends on factors such as industry competition, keyword difficulty, and the strength of existing competitors. However, the data shows that SaaS companies achieving higher levels of organic traffic were rarely doing so with a minimal backlink presence.

SaaS Startups With Stronger Referring-Domain Profiles Were 29 Times More Likely to Reach 1,000 Monthly Organic Visits

The relationship between referring domains and organic performance became even clearer when Get Pro Links compared SaaS startups based on their backlink strength.

Among startups in the lowest 25% by referring domains, only 13.8% had measurable organic traffic, and just 1.1% reached 1,000+ monthly organic visits after approximately one year.

The difference was significant among startups with stronger referring-domain profiles. In the highest 25% group, 72% had measurable organic traffic, while 32.4% had crossed the 1,000 monthly organic visit threshold.

Based on this comparison, SaaS startups with the strongest referring-domain profiles were approximately 29 times more likely to achieve 1,000+ monthly organic visits compared with startups in the lowest group.

The research does not suggest that backlinks are the only factor behind SaaS growth. Product quality, content strategy, technical SEO, market demand, and brand recognition all influence performance. However, the difference between companies with limited external authority and those with broader backlink ecosystems was substantial.

The data indicates that earning recognition from a wider range of relevant websites can significantly improve a startup’s ability to gain organic visibility.

SaaS Startups Reaching 1,000+ Monthly Organic Visits Typically Had 726+ Referring Domains and 6,793+ Backlinks

The research also revealed a consistent backlink pattern among SaaS startups that managed to achieve early organic traction.

Among SaaS startups reaching 1,000+ monthly organic visits, approximately 61% had accumulated 726 or more referring domains. The same proportion had built a backlink profile of at least 6,793 backlinks.

This demonstrates that startups achieving meaningful search visibility were generally supported by a wider authority network rather than a small number of isolated links.

However, the research does not suggest that reaching a specific backlink number guarantees growth. A SaaS company targeting a narrow market may succeed with fewer links, while a company competing in a highly competitive category may require significantly more authority.

The more important takeaway is that successful SaaS startups typically built a strong external presence alongside their product, content, and technical foundation.

More Backlinks Did Not Automatically Translate Into More Organic Growth

While stronger backlink profiles were common among successful SaaS startups, Get Pro Links’ analysis also showed that backlink quantity alone does not determine search performance.

Among SaaS websites with 10,000 or more backlinks, approximately 35% still had no measurable organic traffic. Even among websites with more than 100,000 backlinks, around 29% recorded zero measurable organic traffic.

The same pattern appeared when analysing referring domains. Approximately 23% of websites with 500+ referring domains still had no measurable organic traffic.

These findings show that volume alone is not enough. A backlink profile can only contribute to growth when links come from relevant sources, support valuable pages, and create meaningful authority signals.

For SaaS companies, the objective should not be to accumulate the highest possible number of backlinks. The focus should be on earning references that strengthen credibility, improve discoverability, and support important pages across the search journey.

Link Building Is Becoming a Distribution Strategy Beyond Traditional SEO

The value of link building extends beyond rankings alone. For early-stage SaaS companies, relevant third-party mentions help establish credibility, increase brand awareness, and introduce products to audiences that may not discover them otherwise.

A new SaaS company often faces a trust challenge. Potential customers want evidence that a product is legitimate, useful, and recognised within its category. Mentions from relevant publications, industry websites, and trusted sources provide those external validation signals.

This is why strategic link building has become more than an SEO activity. A strong editorial placement can contribute to search visibility, referral traffic, brand recognition, and overall market positioning.

The most effective SaaS link-building strategies are not focused only on increasing backlink numbers. They focus on building a stronger presence across the wider web and creating associations between a brand, its expertise, and the problems it solves.

    Methodology

Get Pro Links analysed more than 700 SaaS startups launched through Product Hunt in August 2025.

The startups were exported from Product Hunt and evaluated using Ahrefs approximately one year after launch.

    The research analysed:

    • Organic traffic performance
    • Referring domains
    • Total backlinks
    • Domain Rating (DR)
    • Backlink profile strength

The purpose of the study was to identify patterns between backlink authority and organic growth among newly launched SaaS companies.

    Conclusion

The research shows that backlinks alone do not determine whether a SaaS startup succeeds. A strong product, effective marketing, technical SEO, and customer demand all play important roles.

However, the data reveals a clear pattern:

SaaS startups achieving stronger organic visibility were significantly more likely to have built broader backlink ecosystems and earned recognition from a larger number of independent websites.

As launching software becomes easier, competition for attention becomes harder. The SaaS companies that succeed in search will not only be those that build great products, but those that build enough authority for customers, search engines, and the wider web to recognise them.
